The idea came to me when I was fishing with my son and grandchildren, as I boarded their 20-foot Bay boat with my MirrOLure rigged and hooked onto the support for the rod guide. I remember my son calling out: “You have to cut that off, Dad! It’s about nose-level to an eight year old when we put the rod into a holder!” So, of course, I did, and although we had a great day on the water – and even caught some fish – I ended up losing some expensive leader...
The next day, I surfed the internet to see if there was a product that might solve this challenge. What I found was a plastic sheet, hook, and loop wrap that was not only expensive, but could potentially damage the rod when in use. Not to mention, the hooks could also sometimes get caught in the loops! There were a few more “plastic cases,” but what we had in mind seemed more effective, user-friendly, and could fit in a fisherman’s pocket while fishing.
After lots of input from our sons, Scott and Jeff, my friend Tom (an engineer) and I got to work designing Lure-Guard. After much time, revision, frustration, and the invaluable help of Tom, we finally created our prototype using the 3-D printing method. After displaying it to family, friends, and individuals in the fishing business, the positive feedback encouraged us to move forward. We had injection tooling made, molded some product, and went to market. Not only are we proud of the reception Lure-Guard has gained, but proud to say that it’s made in the U.S.A. and is patented!
